If you keep your eyes open about this time of year as you walk about your town, you're likely to spot someone pruning trees and you can likely get some sturdy limbs sawed to whatever length you wish. You could try phoning a tree pruning service to see if they would salvage a few for you. (Most services reduce the trees to chips on the spot but could easily keep a few out of the chipper for you.) Another alternative would be to take a drive in the country and approach a landowner with a likely looking woodlot to see if you could salvage some deadfall. Most fireplace stores sell the "cast iron basket" you're referring to.
